Just Do It!

As you might remember, I sent my eldest son off to college for the first time last fall. We still have one at home, but it didn’t take long for my wife and I to find ourselves with more free time than we’ve been used to. So what did we do with it?

Yep, we’ve been watching lots of streaming movies and shows. If Netflix has launched it in the last 3-4 months, we’ve probably seen it. (Reviews and plot spoilers available upon request!)

While it has felt nice to slow down to some extent, I’ve realized again lately that I feel a deep desire to make my time count. I don’t need to be going hard after something at all times, but I do need to spend regular time doing constructive, productive things. So I reflected a while, and as 2026 has gotten underway I’m making investments in a few key areas:

  • Game Changer Communications. Owning, running and scaling a business like this requires steady investment in new systems and concepts. I’ve identified a few I’m excited about, and I’m already working to put them into motion.

  • Exercise. Over the last 1-2 years, I’ve noticed that many of the most respected and productive executives in my circles have something in common: they make the time to work out. And they don’t just go once or twice a week when they can – they are fully committed to a program that helps them stay both physically and mentally strong. Even more, when push really comes to shove, they prioritize the exercise and figure it out from there. With the help of a trainer, I’ve found a program at my gym that I like. I’m two weeks into it, and so far so good.

  • Service. I’ve said yes to the roles of Treasurer and Councilmember at my church. I’ve re-engaged with some mentorship programs I value. I’m exploring new opportunities with PRSA, the trade organization I’ve spent so much time with over the years. As I expand my horizons, I’m reminded of what makes me happiest – and that’s always something to keep in the crosshairs going forward.

Who knows…maybe we’ll volunteer at the zoo or the hospital too.

Long story short: I’ve re-ignited my purpose over the last few weeks by opening my aperture and saying yes to some new things. I’m also showing up for these new things regularly, in the hopes they’ll become good habits.

Whether it’s professional or personal, what do you want to accomplish this year? How can you put things into motion, and develop good habits, to ensure you hit the mark?

In the end, it really does come down to the tried-and-true Nike slogan. Just do it.
